Jumping The Broom (2011) [Blu-ray]
Comedy

Producers T. D. Jakes and Tracey E. Edmonds invite you to the marriage of Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton, Precious) and Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso, Fast & Furious), who just might be the perfect couple. Unfortunately, their families are a perfect recipe for disaster. Mrs. Watson (Angela Bassett) has an upper-crust sensibility that matches her family's Martha's Vineyard estate, where Jason's straight-out-of-Brooklyn mom (Loretta Devine) seems utterly out of place. When the families gather for Jason and Sabrina's wedding, it becomes clear that each side has its traditions... and its secrets. When uptown meets downtown, the truth comes out - and only one question remains. Will this couple endure the hysterical and harrowing trials of love and finally jump the broom?

Basically everyone except Angela Basset could be out-acted by the kids at the local high school. It makes me sick to read that people think the low rating is due to people being "racist". That is absurd. The fact is, the movie has some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Worse than most made-for-TV movies. I wanted to like it b/c I completely understand the whole premise (a couple getting married and they can't get along with their in-laws)as I lived it years ago. But the script was tired and has been done over and over and over again. The characters were cliché'd and some things I just didn't find believable. This movie just wasn't good. Sorry.

Summary: Concept was fine but acting was HORRID!!!!

So after reading the review, I was looking forward to seeing something new. Fresh air in the torrid Mohave Desert, a half-comedy (satirical i thought) among African-Americans from different socio-economic backgrounds. Sounded great! OMG, nothing had me prepared for this! The setting was stunning and most of the acting list were gorgeous looking. Unfortunately, what they had in looks they lacked in acting quality. The plot is superficial and artificial. Clichés and stereotypes abound. Jokes are not even funny. Sex jokes run throughout the movie. The French lines were bizarre to say the least. If one from the upper classes, does one have to speak French? In America? Mais pas du tout! African-American cinema this? No, certainly not. Not even cinema, this a matinée for adolescent girls.

Summary: Disappointing.

[CSW] -1.8- I'm sorry to say that I didn't find the portrayal of two very chaotic and dysfunctional families all that funny or entertaining. I suppose that if I had found it funny I might have actually liked it but it smacks of class differences that our founding fathers were worried enough to work to form a government that tries rather successfully eliminated it. This movie wasn't about race because if the whole cast had been white it would have still been the same movie. I too found all of the acting to be rather poor and over the top for everyone except Angela Basset. The photography was excellent but it seemed to me to be a poor story told even more poorly. It was supposed to be a feel good comedy that didn't make me laugh or feel good.
